About the Artist - Eunkyung Na
Artist Statement
I am a native of Seoul, Korea and an instructor of the tea ceremonies of Korea, Japan and Okinawa. Naturally, my ceramic style attempts to blend beautiful design and color with the function desired by tea practitioners. I studied pottery making intensively while living in Asia for four years. During that time, I was able to learn a broad range of traditional Asian techniques from eight different teachers in Tokyo, Yokohama, Aomori and Okinawa in Japan and Seoul and Daegu in Korea. Returning to the US, I have incorporated sumi-e (oriental brush painting) and Chinese calligraphy into my pottery design. I enjoy watching collectors of my works find creative ways to use my tea ware. One interior designer was using my tea ceremony lotus bowls for displaying candles. Another gentleman presented a proposal ring in an incense box I created.
